Year 2
Year Two
Curriculum
At St. Helen’s we are committed to developing the whole child through a broad and balanced curriculum. We ensure that we cover all areas of the National Curriculum.
Supporting Learning at Home
We recognize the extremely important role that parents play in their child’s education. We want to work in partnership to help parents develop their skills supporting their child’s learning at home. If parents would like any support with developing home learning please see the Year 2 team.
Every week we change the children’s home reading books (when possible), as well as sending home spellings, times tables, mental maths and homework for the children to learn and complete.
Year Two Expectations
The children in year 2 are assessed in two ways; formative and summative. In all subjects, the children are given a teacher assessment. This happens throughout the year to ensure all children are making progress. The children’s attainment is measured as Working Towards the Standard (WTS), Working At the Standard (EXS) and working at Greater Depth (GDS).
Children are given targets to move their learning forward.
For reading, writing and maths the Year Two children will also be assessed against the statutory assessment framework. Pupils need to meet all of the statements to be awarded the standard. At the end of the academic year, for these subjects we will report on whether each child is working towards, at expected, or above the expected standard of year two.
News & Photos
In religion, we have been learning about Stewardship and looking after God’s world. Children experienced how it would feel to have their environment destroyed and not taken care of. This helped us to understand how God feels when people do not take care of His world.
In Year 2, we are studying Noah’s Ark and the covenant God sent which was symbolised with a rainbow. We designed our own rainbows and wrote what God promises to take care of. As part of our outdoor learning some of us created a poster showing Noah’s Ark and all of the animals that were on the Ark in twos.
This week the Blessed Sacrament is visiting St Helen’s. We visited the Blessed Sacrament and adored the Blessed Sacrament in a calm and quiet environment. This gave us an opportunity to pray for our own intentions. We all felt very blessed to be able to have the blessed sacrament at St Helen’s and we know and understand that we can always speak to Jesus.
In our religion unit, we have been learning about Noah's Ark and God's Promise. We have been thinking about what it actually would have been like to live on an old Ark for forty days and forty nights. It would not have been comfortable or clean! We spent some time experiencing how this would have felt.
